The Office of the City Clerk is one of the oldest offices in Jersey City government. City Clerk Sean J. Gallagher leads the office. The original role was limited to taking meeting minutes and affixing the City seal. Today the office handles vital records, OPRA requests, landlord and lobbyist registration, and election certification.

The clerk serves as Secretary to the Municipal Council, keeper of the City Seal, Chief Election Officer, and the person responsible for records management. Jersey City Vital Records Residents Directory

Birth certificates for people born in Jersey City after 1925 can be obtained through the Division of Vital Records. Previously, only records after 1949 were available locally. The expansion of service now covers nearly a century of birth records. Requests can be made in person by appointment, by mail, or online through VitalChek.

For in-person appointments, call 201-547-5150, Option 1. Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and cash payment. The fee is $20 for the first copy and $10 for each additional copy. Marriage and death certificates follow similar procedures.

For mail requests, send the completed REG 37A form along with a photocopy of your valid government-issued photo ID, a check or money order payable to "The City of Jersey City," and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
